Shrink tubing is a very handy item to have when you are wiring your layout.    RailTronics highly recommends the use of shrink tubing for any of your wire joints or splices.

Some of the advantages of shrink tubing are as follows:

·         Is faster and easier to use than electrical tape, especially with the small gauges of wire used for most layouts,

·         Provides complete electrical isolation of conductors

·         Is more durable and has a longer life span than electrical tape.

·         Is easy to work with.  Shrink tubing can be cut with scissors or pliers.

In addition heat shrink tubing is.

·         Available in a rainbow of colours to match your wiring, so you can maintain your wire colour codes even through your wire joints/splices.

·         Available in a range of sizes to suite the size of wire and the size of splices of joints that you are working with.   Shrink tubing will shrink down to ½ its original size.

To use shrink tubing:

  1. Cut off an appropriate length of tubing and slide over one of the wires to be soldered.  Remember the tubing will shrink to ½ of its original size when choosing the size of tubing you are going to use.
  2. Solder your joint.  Keep the tubing as far away from the soldering iron and the heat that will travel down the wire being soldered.  The tubing may start to shrink from this transferred heat that may make it difficult to slide over the soldered joint.
  3. Slide the tubing over the joint and shrink with a heat source.  The recommended heat source is a heat gun, however a hair dryer can also be used.  The use of your soldering iron or an open flame is not recommended!
