Miniature Lamps and Bulbs

Shown to the right of this paragraph is a comparison diagram of our small light bulbs as they related to one another and a reference coin.  Shown in the chart below  are photos of each of the miniature bulbs we currently carry followed by a chart listing all of the bulbs currently available from RailTronics.   These bulbs are great for various lighting purposes on your layout including your structures, number boards in your (N scale) locomotives (use the .75 mm Ultra Small bulb), passenger coach lighting and many other uses.  Since these small bulbs operate with 1.5 VDC they start operating almost right away!  The Super Micro Bulbs are also available in the colours Amber, Green and Red which will allow you to use them in many more places on your layout.    Refer to the notes below for how to hook these light bulbs up using a resistor (click here to see our resistor selection) to prevent destruction.  You can also use these bulbs with diode (click here to see our diode selection) based constant lighting circuits.

The 1.5 VDC bulbs should only be hooked up to a single 1.5V battery (ie. AA, AAA, C or D) or to a 1.5VDC supply (available separately).  Please note these are DC voltages, do not connect these bulbs to AC voltage.

If you wish to use a higher voltage supply you must connect the lamp via a series resistor or it will be instantly destroyed. For example using a 12V supply a 700 ohm 1/4 W or higher resistor is required.  For 16V supply a minimum 1k ohm 1/4 W resistor should be used.  A diagram is provided below which illustrates these two examples.  If you wish you can also obtain resistors from RailTronics, click here for more information.  Alternatively you can also place bulbs in series however if one fails it's that old Christmas tree problem, which bulb is dead?  If you have any questions please call us or send an e-mail.

Lighting Kits

Shown below are a number of lighting kits which will find application on your model railroads in many places.  These kits use the miniature light bulbs shown above and add a few extra parts to make them into a complete lighting system which just requires your assembly and installation on your layout or in your structures.

Shade Lamp - This lamp is typical of outdoor/security lamps found on all types of buildings.  You will also find application for this lamp as a hanging ceiling lamp in many industrial structures, garages and sheds.  The lamp is constructed of stamped brass and pained "Industrial Green" on the outside and "Reflector White" on the inside.  Equipped with a 1.5V clear micro bulb (see E-LmCSM above).  The diameter of the lamp is 5/16".  For use in all scales HO and larger.  You have probably seen these bulbs used in many magazine articles and in NMRA contest models!
  • Specifications:  1.5V, 15 mA, 1000 hours
  • Price:  $ 4.49 Order Code:  E-LmSH
Same as below without brass tube Frosted Globe Lamp - This lamp is a frosted globe of 6 mm diameter with a 1.5V clear micro bulb (see E-LmCSM above) installed.  You can use this lamp in scales from HO through to S.  In HO the globe size is roughly equivalent to an 18" globe.
  • Specifications:  1.5V. 15 mA, 1000 hours
  • Price:  $ 6.35 Order Code:  E-LmGL
Frosted Globe Streetlight Kit - This kit comes with a 1.5V clear micro bulb (see E-LmCSM above), a 1.5"L x 1/16" diameter brass tube, a drilled 6 mm frosted Globe Lamp (as above) and instructions.  Simply glue the bulb into the globe, run the wires through the brass tube, place on your layout and connect to 1.5V supply.  Use on all scales HO through S.
  • Specifications:  1.5V, 15 mA, 1000 hours
  • Price:  $ 10.75 Order Code:  E-LKGL
Oldtyme Gas Streetlight Kit - This kit consists of a clear 1.5V micro bulb (see E-LmCSM above), a 1.5"L x 1/16" diameter brass tube, a tapered transparent lens, a plastic cap and instructions.  Install in the same manner as described above (Globe Streetlight Kit).  The lens, with black cap measures 3/8" high and 3/16" square at the top.  Use on all scales HO through S.
  • Specifications:  1.5V 15 mA
  • Price:  $ 10.75 Order Code:  E-LKGS
