Magnet wire is very small gauge solid wire that has been insulated with lacquer. This wire is ideal for use in places where you can't hide the wire very well or you need a real small wire.
Examples would include the following:
- Lamps on the arms of crossing gates. Here you can glue the wire right on the arms and then solder your connections. When finished paint it all. The wire is so small you won't even notice it.
- Making your own street lamps or signals. You can run the wire up to the lamps or led. In most cases you would build the lamp/signal out of brass and use the brass as your return. You could however run two wires up to the lamp/led as well.
- Hanging small LEDs or lamps over intersections. The magnet wire will serve as your supporting cable and at the same time provide your electrical power. Combined with Surface Mount LEDs this can create a very impressive animation detail on your layout.
- Magnet wire can also be used to make your own electro magnets (such as for decoupling) or other animation purposes.
